1996–97 was Derby County's first season of play in the Premier League, after their promotion from the First Division the previous season. Derby performed well for a newly promoted club, finishing 12th in the 20 team division. The highlight of the season was a 3–2 win against champions Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Paulo Wanchope scoring a "wonder goal" on his English league debut.
